Beckton CHiP Plant

The group visited the combined heat and intelligent power (CHiP) plant at Beckton in east London on 18 April where Andrew Barnard and Dermot Logan very kindly gave us an excellent tour of the facility.  The plant is equipped with a two-stroke MAN B&W type 7K60MC-S 13.9 MW diesel engine operating mainly on tallow. Recovered heat from the engine is supplied to the adjacent gas pressure reduction station owned by the national grid, replacing the gas boilers which would otherwise be required to preheat the gas. The visit gave everyone the opportunity to experience the noise and vibration emitted by a large operational marine diesel engine and was considered a great success by all involved.
